Better Cold Things
we dig it when it’s sustainable
Youth Power Climate Action Promotes Sustainable Refrigerants in Alameda!
Refrigerants are heating up our planet.
Did you know that refrigerators contain hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), greenhouse gasses that overheat the climate 2,000-4,000 times MORE than carbon dioxide?
What’s even more alarming is that, on average, 25% of these gasses leak into the atmosphere from each commercial fridge every year.
We Need to Chill on Cooling
Youthpower Climate Action is doing something about it– and we want YOU to join us!
A local youth-led environmental group,Youthpower Climate Action is partnering with small grocery stores in Alameda to help them switch to climate-safe refrigerants.
These natural refrigerants keep the climate cool, but they can be prohibitively expensive.
To combat that challenge, Youthpower has created a community-sponsored refrigerant fund which Alameda Natural Grocery is a part of.
Through tabling and community presentations, Youthpower has begun a fundraising campaign. Future plans include applying to state grants and researching other creative financing mechanisms.

Thousands of dollars are needed to promote widespread natural refrigeration, but with the support of the community, as well as state grants, we can make this happen!
Join Us
We want everyone in Alameda to know what a significant difference it will make for the climate to have natural refrigerants in our grocery stores.
To make that happen, we need help with outreach, fundraising, and grant-writing for this project.

Updates & Findings
Smaller and self-contained fridges that hold drinks are often propane-based. On top of the refrigerants being much less harmful, they have low leak rates and good energy efficiency.

Some Alameda grocery stores, like Al Jazeera Market on Webster and here at Alameda Natural Grocery, already have some climate-friendly fridges!
